Born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq, al Rubei'i earned her bachelor's degree from Baghdad University and her master's from Al Mustansiriya University. Based in Baghdad throughout her life and career, Rubei'i had her first journalism assignment in 1993 as a reporter for the Baghdad Observer, the only English language newspaper in Iraq at the time. In 2003, when Saddam Hussein's regime was overthrown, she started with ARD German Radio as a reporter. Since early 2004, she has been a reporter for National Public Radio, covering the Iraq war and politics.
