Former Knight Fellow Jaime Mantilla of Ecuador has been elected president of the Inter American Press Association for 2012-13.
Mantilla, a Knight Fellow in 1992-93, is the executive director and president of Hoy, a newspaper company in Quito. His election took place at IAPA’s 68th General Assembly in São Paulo, Brazil.
IAPA (known in Spanish-speaking countries as Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa) is a non-profit organization devoted to defending freedom of speech and freedom of the press in South, Central and North America. It was founded in 1926 and currently has about 1,400 member publications with a combined circulation of more than 43 million.
It carries out a wide range of activities, including monitoring violations of press freedoms, conducting public campaigns on press freedom issues and initiating emergency fact-finding visits to countries where the press is under attack.
Mantilla will serve until the association’s 2013 General Assembly next year in Denver, Colo.
