John S. Knight Fellowships for Professional Journalists

Letter in Support of Jailed Reporter

More than 100 Knight Fellowship alumni and family members have signed a letter to jailed New York Times reporter Judith Miller in support of her decision not to disclose her confidential sources in the Valerie Plame investigation. Following is a cover letter to Miller from the director and deputy director of the Knight Fellowships, along with the letter from fellowship alumni to her:

Dear Judith Miller,

When several hundred alumni of the Knight Professional
Journalism Fellowships Program gathered at Stanford for a reunion
and conference this weekend, your case was much on our minds. We
want to convey to you directly our support for your resolve in
this matter. We admire your commitment to honor your promise of
confidentiality to your source, even in the face of this
unwarranted imprisonment. We hope that you find additional
strength in the backing of the people who have signed below and
the thousands of other journalists you represent.

Sincerely,

James R. Bettinger, Director	Dawn E. Garcia, Deputy Director

Dear Judy,

We are 400 former Professional Journalism/Knight Fellows
gathered for the weekend for our quadrennial reunion-conference
at Stanford University, and the dominant theme in all our programs
has been our gratitude and respect for you and what you have done
this week to support the profession we practice and the principles
we cherish.

We thank you individually and collectively.
