John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships

Inventing Freelancing's Future

Future of Freelancing Logo Knight Fellow Christine Larson imagines a future of journalism that is determined not by major media companies, but by journalists themselves. Next month, she will convene the Future of Freelancing conference at Stanford, a first-of-its-kind event exploring the changing landscape of independent journalism. As traditional media companies continue to struggle, it has become increasingly clear that independent journalists will take on a more vital and visible role in informing the public and reinvigorating the profession. The conference, June 18-19, will bring together 40 editors from leading print and digital outlets with 125 freelance journalists to explore transformations in print, digital and book publishing and emerging opportunities for independent journalists. Larson is a longtime freelance writer from Sacramento, CA, and this conference is the result of her focus during her fellowship on creating networks and tools to help independent journalists. The John S. Knight Fellowships program and the American Society of Journalists and Authors are producing the conference. Speakers include editors from The New Yorkers, Harper's, the Washington Post, Esquire, Wired, Pro Publica, AOL's Patch.com, the Bay Citizen, Amazon.com , MTV and many other outlets.
