Message from the DirectorThe Power of a FellowshipJames R. Bettinger
Journalism fellowships at Stanford began 45 years ago with a cool idea: giving reporters and editors access to the classrooms and libraries of a great university would pay off in quality journalism. It has. But the challenges to journalism - and the possibilities - are greater than anyone could have imagined, and that's why the original idea isn't enough. So the Knight Fellowships transformed itself to serve the needs of journalism and journalists by focusing on innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership. Journalism is a chaotic and exciting proposition today, rife with problems and opportunities. A Knight Fellowship will give you the chance and the resources to make more of a difference than you ever could have imagined. Yes, it will get you away from deadlines for a few months, but that's just the beginning. You can take a fresh look at things that have intrigued you, or vexed you. You can dig deeply and widely into the resources of a great university, not to mention Silicon Valley, and acquire skills and tools that you will be using for years. And you will have the chance - and the responsibility - to create something of value for other journalists. (Want to see what that can mean? Just take a look at what the 2010-11 Knight Fellows did, and what the current group is working on.) More than 900 people have been journalism fellows at Stanford. We're proud of the work they've done, and we stand ready to help 20 more each year. Shouldn't you be one of them? |
